Vancouver Canucks Recall Aatu Raty Ahead of Crucial Stretch

Vancouver brings back young forward Aatu Räty as they gear up for key games in the playoff race.

The Vancouver Canucks have called up forward Aatu Raty from their AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks, following injuries to Elias Pettersson and Nils Hoglander. With key players sidelined, Räty will have another chance to prove himself at the NHL level.

Raty’s journey to this point has been anything but ordinary. Once considered a top prospect ahead of the 2021 NHL Draft, the Finnish forward’s stock dropped after an underwhelming pre-draft season, causing him to slide to the 52nd overall pick. Originally selected by the New York Islanders, he was traded to Vancouver just a year later as part of a more significant deal. Since then, he has been steadily working his way up the Canucks’ depth chart.

Last season, Raty spent his entire campaign in the AHL, where he made a strong impression. The 21-year-old notched 18 goals and 52 points in 72 regular-season games, adding another four points in six playoff contests. While he may not be the top forward prospect in Vancouver’s system, his consistent development has made him a reliable depth option.

This year, Raty started in the Canucks’ training camp but was reassigned to Abbotsford after just a few days. Despite that, he has frequently bounced between the NHL and AHL, making 21 appearances for Vancouver this season. However, his role has been fairly limited at the NHL level, averaging just 9:30 of ice time per game and contributing four points (two goals, two assists).

Down in Abbotsford, though, Raty has been a standout performer. Leading the team in scoring with 17 goals and 39 points in 41 games, he has demonstrated his ability to produce offensively when given the opportunity. His strong play has also helped Abbotsford maintain a solid playoff position in the highly competitive Pacific Division, where they currently sit in third place.

With Vancouver amid a crucial stretch and battling injuries, this recall presents Raty with another chance to solidify his spot in the NHL lineup. Whether he can make an impact remains to be seen, but with his upward trajectory and impressive AHL performances, the young forward is certainly making a strong case for himself.
