How Is Cooper Cupp’s Signing With the Seattle Seahawks Better Than What Meets the Eye!

The Seattle Seahawks have been very aggressive in pursuing the best players available in the offseason. First they got hold of Sam Darnold who was arguably the best quarterback available in free agency. Darnold played for the Vikings last season but after they refused to place their franchise tag on the QB, the Seahawks immediately took him away from the market and signed him to a three-year deal.

They traded away Geno Smith, and DK Metcalf away, and also resigned WR Cody White, and LB Josh Ross to a one-year deal. Now, they got another weapon in Cooper Kupp.

When the L.A Rams traded for WR Davante Adams, we all knew that it was just a matter of time before Kupp would be traded away from the team too. Ever since Kupp’s historic season in 2021, his production has been steadily deteriorating and his health was also a big factor. The 31 year old hasn’t played in more than 12 games in a regular season ever since he won the Super Bowl. It was time for both the parties to bid farewell and move on.

So the Seattle Seahawks acquired Kupp on a three-year $45 million deal, which will give their quarterback Sam Darnold a great weapon in their offense. Today we’ll look at how the Cooper Kupp trade will help Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks. Let’s get right into it.

How Will Acquiring Cooper Kupp Help Darnold and the Seahawks?

After the Seahawks let go of wide receivers Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, they had to get somebody to fill up that hole. Acquiring Kupp could be the answer towards that problem. In fact, the signing of Kupp and Darnold looks to be a huge upgrade and if anything, the moves that Seahawks made looks like they want to win now instead of waiting.

We primarily think that the Seahawks acquired Kupp to maximize Sam Darnold’s ability to throw the football. Darnold is coming off of his career best season where he had a pass completion rate of 66.2 percent, 35 touchdowns, and 4319 passing yards. He proved last season that he can thrive if he’s given reliable targets and a structured scheme. Sure, Cooper Kupp is not the player that he once was and Darnold had Justin Jefferson as his target in Minnesota, but we still believe that even with lesser talent than he previously had, he can still take the Seahawks further than what they achieved last season.

Kupp is still in the high 60s when it comes to his catch percentage and since his game is built on intelligence rather than raw athleticism, it suits Darnold’s game who excels with quick, timing-based throws. Kupp could also be a security blanket for Darnold, especially on short/intermediate routes where Kupp has exceled through his career. Since the Seahawks also have WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the Seahawks’ offense looks like it will run heavily on quick passing game.

Familiarity for Cooper Kupp and Sam Darnold

The Seahawks’ offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s presence, who worked with Darnold in San Francisco in 2023, and pass game coordinator, Jake Peetz, who coached Kupp with the Rams in 2022-2023, adds a layer of familiarity for both these players which could help them in the long run.

There are still a lot of questions of the Seahawks moving forward but they could be dangerous come next season.
