Giancarlo Stanton Injury Update: Yankees Veteran Dealing With More Than Elbow Issues

Giancarlo Stanton is also dealing with a chronic calf issue

After the Yankees crashed out of the 2023 season without a postseason berth, the conversation around Giancarlo Stanton’s availability and durability was unavoidable.

Brian Cashman didn’t mince words in a heated exchange with reporters, bluntly stating, “He’s going to wind up getting hurt again, more likely than not, because it seems to be part of his game.”

Stanton’s agent, Joel Wolfe, didn’t take long to fire back: “It’s a good reminder for all free agents considering signing in New York, both foreign and domestic, that to play for that team, you’ve got to be made of Teflon—both mentally and physically—because you can never let your guard down, even in the offseason.”

The backlash was swift, forcing Cashman to issue a clarification. Maybe it was frustration, maybe it was just poor wording, but calling out a veteran player like that – one who had already battled through countless injuries – wasn’t exactly the right move.

But here’s the thing: how wrong was Brian Cashman, really?

In 2024, Stanton played 114 games, not ideal, but more than the 101 he managed the year before. And when the lights were brightest, he delivered. Stanton slugged .709 with a 183 wRC+ in the Yankees’ postseason run, crushing one clutch home run after another as they leaned on him to carry the right-handed side of the lineup. He won ALCS MVP and reminded everyone exactly why he was worth the money.

And now, as Stanton tries to recover from severe tennis elbow, the Yankees have been dealt another blow. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Stanton is also dealing with a chronic calf issue, further complicating his path back to the field. With his elbow already putting his season in jeopardy, and the looming threat of surgery if it doesn’t improve, the calf problem is just another frustrating layer to his injury saga.

The Yankees had already subjected Stanton to multiple rounds of PRP injections, hoping to reduce inflammation and speed up healing. But he’s still dealing with lingering pain, and there’s no clear answer on whether these treatments will be enough.

A cautiously optimistic timeline pegs Stanton’s return around Memorial Day, but there’s little tangible evidence suggesting he’ll be back by then. And with Gerrit Cole already sidelined and no major reinforcements on the way, the Yankees will need to overachieve early- or hope Stanton can return for a second-half push – if they want to keep their postseason hopes alive.
