Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns joins NBA Greats Carmelo Anthony and Pat Ewing with huge record

Karl Anthony Towns etched his name in the history books of the franchise as the New York Knicks recorded a close 149-148 overtime win over the Atlanta Hawks on February 12.

The Wednesday night thriller saw Towns recording his second 40 point score in consecutive games for the first time. As an unstoppable Towns finished with 44 points, ten rebounds and three assists, he joined the company of some of the franchise’s all-time greats.

He is the only Knick player after Bernard King, Patrick Ewing, Carmelo Anthony and Jalen Brunson to score 40+ points in back-to-back games.

In the previous game, where the Knicks recorded a big 125-115 win over the Pacers, Towns scored 40 points, and had 12 rebounds and five assists. However, Anthony, playing his debut season with New York, had two steals and seven three-pointers in Wednesday game.

Not only this, but his turnover on an inbound pass under the basket helped New York with a six-point lead in the final seconds, before the game headed into overtime. Later, Jalen Brunson came up with a jumper in the final 11.1 seconds, which guided the side to a narrow 149-148 win.

Brunson finished with 36 points, three rebounds and eight assists. Precious Achiuwa had 26 points, eight rebounds and one assist on his own, while Josh Hart finished with 18 points, ten rebounds and six assists.

The Hawks, on the other hand, had a poor first half, where they were trailing their counterparts 68-60. However, Trae Young led the side with 38 points, one rebound and 19 assists, as well as giving the chance to win in overtime. Apart from him, Dyson Daniels scored 23 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Onyeka Okongwu finished with 21 points.

The Knicks, sitting in the third spot of the Eastern Conference standings with 36-18 tally, will now be up against the Bulls on Thursday, Feb. 20.

Karl expressed his excitement about his consecutive 40-point score for the side, but emphasized that winning is more important.

He said, “I’m just happy those kind of nights result in wins. That’s the most important thing for the city.”

Hailing his teammates as the reason behind the Knicks’ success in the season, the 29-year-old said, “[Teammates] are the reason we’ve been able to have the success. It’s an everyday professionalism. The sacrifice that everyone is willing to do to find a way to win every night for the city.”

Notably, Karl was traded from the Timberwolves to the Knicks as a part of the three-team trade, which included the Charlotte Hornets. Averaging at 24.7 points, 13.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game this season, Anthony was named as an Eastern Conference starter for the 2025 All-Star Game.
