Luka Doncic Injury Update: Head coach Jason Kidd provides positive update on Mavericks star’s injury

Doncic suffered a calf contusion during the Mavericks training camp.

Luka Doncic returned to practice on Wednesday for the first time in two weeks, marking a significant step in his recovery. However, the Dallas Mavericks forward is not expected to play in the upcoming preseason matchup against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Head coach Jason Kidd provided an encouraging update, stating that Doncic performed “really, really well” during the session. The star player has been sidelined due to a left calf contusion sustained during training camp, necessitating some time off to heal.

While Kidd mentioned Doncic will likely miss the preseason finale, his participation in a full practice indicates positive progress. This bodes well for Doncic’s availability in the Mavs’ season opener against the San Antonio Spurs next Thursday night.

Notably, Doncic has yet to share the court in a preseason game with teammates Kyrie Irving and Klay Thompson.

Last season, Doncic led the league in scoring, averaging an impressive 33.9 points per game, along with a career-high 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds. As he continues his recovery, the Mavericks remain optimistic about his impact as they prepare for the new season.

Luka Doncic and his history with calf injuries

Luka Doncic’s history with calf injuries has been challenging, particularly regarding his left calf, which has endured significant wear and tear.

While the current calf contusion differs from the strains he has experienced over the past two and a half years, it still adds to a troubling narrative. Doncic struggled with a calf strain during the early stages of the 2022 NBA Playoffs and faced similar issues in the preseason last year.

Fortunately, the current contusion does not appear to be as severe, allowing for optimism regarding his recovery timeline. With a full practice completed, Doncic is expected to be ready for the season opener next week. His quick return would be a relief for the Mavericks, who rely heavily on his contributions.

This past summer’s rest was vital for Doncic, especially after battling injuries throughout last season’s playoffs. By the time the NBA Finals arrived, he was noticeably hindered, highlighting the need for him to enter the new season at peak performance. The Mavericks are eager to see Doncic back to his best form as they aim for yet another successful campaign.
