Red Wings Call Up Elmer Soderblom Amid Tyler Motte’s Injury

Detroit adds 6'8" forward Elmer Söderblom from AHL Griffins as Tyler Motte deals with injury ahead of their matchup with the Flyers.

Due to the persistent injury bothering depth forward Tyler Motte, the Detroit Red Wings were set to call up a forward before today’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers. While it’s not confirmed whether he will participate tonight, the Red Wings have stated that they have called up forward Elmer Soderblom from their AHL partner, the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Söderblom may not rank highly on various top prospect lists, but he enjoys popularity in several communities. Standing at 6’8″, he’s a massive forward who would instantly equal Tyler Myers, Adam Klapka, and Louis Crevier as the second-tallest athletes in an NHL match this season.

He’s a strong skater, particularly given his size, but it hasn’t led to significant point production in AHL Grand Rapids. Following the 2021-22 season, in which he netted 21 goals and tallied 33 points in 51 appearances for Frölunda HC in the SHL, the Red Wings might have believed they had uncovered a gem in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Söderblom made the Detroit training camp roster for the 2022-23 season, netting two goals in the first 13 games while averaging 12:58 of ice time per match. Following a month-long stint in the AHL, Söderblom rejoined the roster in mid-December and improved his performance, netting three goals and accumulating six points in eight games.

The native of Göteborg, Sweden has mostly stalled in his progress since that time, netting 23 goals and 54 points over 119 games for the Griffins, which includes five goals and 17 points in 38 games this season. At just 23 years old, Söderblom has ample time for the Red Wings to assist him in recapturing his impressive performance from his previous SHL season.
