David Montgomery signed a 2-year, $18.25 million contract extension with the Detroit Lions on October 12, 2024. $10.25 million of this contract is guaranteed money. Hence, the Lions are keeping David Montgomery through the 2027 season. A vital part of head coach Dan Campbell’s offensive unit, Montgomery has 1015 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns in the 2023 season.

The recent $18.25 million contract extension makes David Montgomery the 7th highest paid running back in the NFL on a per year basis. 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey leads the list with $19 million annual pay, followed by Alvin Kamara and Jonathan Taylor with $15 and $14 million respectively. The Eagles running back Saquon Barkley also finds himself on the list, thanks to his new contract with Philadelphia.

Montgomery’s contract extension will see him being paired with fellow Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs for at least a couple more years. The Gibbs-Montgomery duo are the most ferocious running back pair in the NFL right now. They are currently the only RB teammate duo in the NFL with 350+ scrimmage yards each.

The Lions running backs also have 4 scrimmage touchdowns each. Jahmyr Gibbs’ contract with the Lions is a 4-year, $17.8 million rookie contract, with a 5th year option available.
