Old rivals meet again with Rome glory on the line
A blockbuster semifinal awaits at the ATP Italian Open as eighth seed Lorenzo Musetti squares off against third seed Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard holds a commanding 4-1 lead in their head-to-head, including a comeback win in their most recent meeting at the Monte Carlo final.
Musetti had a sluggish start to the season but found his rhythm in Monte Carlo, where he made a deep run, and carried that momentum into Madrid with a semifinal finish. Alcaraz, meanwhile, has been in red-hot form. He’s already captured titles in Rotterdam and Monte Carlo and made impressive runs in Melbourne (QF), Indian Wells (SF), and Barcelona (F).

Now, with both players firing on all cylinders, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Can Musetti recreate the magic of his lone victory over Alcaraz in the 2022 Hamburg final and flip the script? Or will Alcaraz continue to assert his dominance and book his spot in yet another final?
Musetti has been flawless in Rome, reaching the semifinals without dropping a set, including a confident win over second seed Alexander Zverev after a tight first-set tiebreak. Alcaraz has also looked composed, advancing with ease aside from a set-down win over 23rd seed Karen Khachanov in the Round of 16.
The head-to-head stands at 4-1 in favor of Alcaraz. Musetti’s sole win came in the 2022 Hamburg final, but since then, the Spaniard has dominated, winning the next three in straight sets and, most recently, in Monte Carlo, handing Musetti a bagel in a comeback win.

A victory for Musetti wouldn’t flip the rivalry but would mark a major breakthrough in his season and put him one win away from a maiden ATP 1000 title. For Alcaraz, it’s a shot at a fourth final this year and potentially a third title.
