Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy Comments on Head Coach Steve Kerr’s Future with Franchise

Garima Ranawat

Steve Kerr entered final season of his contract he signed with the Dubs in February 2024.

Golden State Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy commented on head coach Steve Kerr’s future with the franchise following the NBA 2025-26 season. Kerr entered the final year of his two-year deal he signed with the Dubs in February, last year. However, he hasn’t committed to coaching the seven-time champions beyond the season. When asked about his extension, the veteran head coach revealed that it is not something that is on his priority list at this point of time.

Kerr’s statement suggests that the chances of getting a deal signed between both the parties are very slim. However, the Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy recently talked about the situation and said that Kerr can stay with the team for as long as he wants. “I guess technically there is [uncertainty],” Dunleavy said on 95.7 The Game.

“This isn’t really a regular situation with a head coach where he’s in the last year of his deal. We know what it is with Steve. He’s been here a long time. He’s been an amazing part of this franchise, and as far as I’m concerned, can stay as long as he wants,” he added, “We’re going to give him the grace of the season to go through it, or at least some of it, to see and feel where he’s at mentally and physically.”

While nothing is certain, there will be a point where both, Steve Kerr and the Warriors, will have to turn the page. However, the upside is, Kerr has flexibility. Considering his accomplishments, it is a no-brainer that the Dubs wouldn’t want to let go of him. However, even if Kerr doesn’t want to return with the team, there are multiple teams who would want to sign such an accomplished coach.

Steve Kerr’s Legacy With Golden State Warriors

Steve Kerr, a five-time NBA champion, is regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the league so far. He joined the Golden State Warriors in May 2014, and under his leadership, the Dubs enjoyed their most successful period in their history. In his rookie season with the team, he became the highest-winning rookie head coach in NBA history with 63+ wins, surpassing Tom Thibodeau’s record of 62 wins.

He became the first head coach in the history of the league to lead his team to 67 or more wins in three consecutive seasons. Named as one of the Top 15 Coaches in NBA History in 2022, he guided the side to six NBA Finals and four championships in 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2022. During the 2015-16 season, the Warriors broke the record of most wins in an NBA season with 73 victories.

The 60-year-old was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2016, and earned the NBA All-Star Game Head Coach in 2015 and 2017. In the most recent season, Kerr recorded his 100th playoff win as a head coach, tying Larry Brown for the sixth spot in the list.
