The Golden State Warriors are already planning years ahead, focusing on financial flexibility for the summer of 2027. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the team has set its sights on a future that could include superstar free agents Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic.

“They want to maintain maximum flexibility for that 2027 summer,” Amick reported. Both Antetokounmpo and Jokic hold player options for the 2027-28 season, making them potential free agents. Other teams, including the Lakers and Clippers, have also positioned themselves for that summer.

The Warriors remain locked in contract negotiations with restricted free agent Jonathan Kuminga. He is seeking a four-year, $120 million deal with a player option, while the team has countered with a three-year, $75.2 million offer without a player option.

This standoff reflects more than money. Golden State Warriors appears intent on keeping its payroll flexible, resisting a long-term commitment that might limit future pursuits. By holding off, they preserve cap space for the possibility of landing superstars in 2027.

Why 2027 Matters for Golden State Warriors?

If the Warriors stay patient, most of their current contracts will be off the books by then. That scenario could allow them to chase Antetokounmpo and Jokic at the same time, giving them a chance to reshape their roster around two of the game’s greatest players.

The opportunity to move to a bigger market may appeal to Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has spent his career in Milwaukee. For Nikola Jokic, the Golden State Warriors could offer a fresh stage after years in Denver, along with a chance to reset championship odds.

While pursuing future stars remains a long-term plan, the Warriors’ immediate concern is maximizing Steph Curry’s remaining seasons. For now, negotiations with Kuminga and roster adjustments for the upcoming campaign remain their short-term priority.
