VJ Edgecombe Explodes for 34, Records Most Points in NBA Debut Since Wilt Chamberlain as 76ers Stun Celtics

Philadelphia 76ers rookie VJ Edgecombe wasted no time announcing himself to the NBA. In his very first professional game, the 19‑year‑old guard scored 34 points against the Boston Celtics, the most by any player in a debut since Wilt Chamberlain poured in 43 back in 1959.

The performance not only etched his name into league history but also helped the Philadelphia 76ers escape with a dramatic 117–116 victory on opening night.

Edgecombe’s scoring outburst ranks as the third‑highest debut total in NBA history, behind only Wilt Chamberlain and Frank Selvy, who had 35 in 1954. He also set a new franchise record for the 76ers, surpassing Allen Iverson’s 30‑point debut in 1996. Performances like this are rare, with only a few players in league history ever approaching the most points in NBA debut mark.

VJ Edgecombe scored 14 points in the opening quarter alone, breaking LeBron James’ NBA record for most points in the first quarter of a debut.

The rookie’s stat line was impressive across the board with 13‑for‑26 shooting from the field, 5‑for‑13 from three‑point range, and 3‑for‑6 at the foul line. He added seven rebounds, three assists, and a steal in 42 minutes of action. His ability to create shots off the dribble and knock down perimeter looks gave Philadelphia a second scoring engine alongside Tyrese Maxey.

Even beyond setting the mark for the most points in NBA debut in over six decades, Edgecombe’s scoring paired perfectly with Tyrese Maxey’s 40‑point night.

Together, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe combined for 74 points, the second‑the highest total ever by a duo in a season opener. Only James Harden and Christian Wood’s 75 points in 2020 rank higher. That production proved vital, as the Sixers nearly let the game slip away in the closing seconds.

VJ Edgecombe missed two free throws with 9.1 seconds left, giving Boston a chance to steal the win, but Payton Pritchard’s last‑second attempts came up short.

The night also marked the return of Joel Embiid, who played for the first time since February. The reigning MVP struggled offensively, scoring just four points on 1‑for‑9 shooting, but his presence anchored the defense and gave the Sixers stability in crunch time.
