Victor Wembanyama Injury Update: What Happened to the Spurs Star, How Long Will He Be Out?

Akash

The Spurs will be without their franchise centerpiece for the next few weeks after Victor Wembanyama was diagnosed with a strained left calf. The 21-year-old big man missed his first game of the season on Sunday against the Sacramento Kings, and the team later confirmed he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks following an MRI.

Wembanyama had been listed as questionable earlier in the day with calf tightness but was ruled out shortly before tipoff. Despite his absence, San Antonio secured a win over Sacramento, showing resilience without their star.

Interim head coach Mitch Johnson emphasized caution, noting the organization is unwilling to take risks with its most important player. “Obviously, we’ve seen around this league recently, the calf-tightness thing is not something you want to take lightly,” Johnson said.

The injury comes after Victor Wembanyama logged 38 minutes in the Spurs’ NBA Cup matchup against Golden State two nights earlier, where he posted 26 points, 12 rebounds, four assists and three blocks. That performance marked his third consecutive game with at least 25 points and 10 rebounds, tying the longest such streak of his young career. He is averaging career highs across the board: 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds and four assists per game, while leading the league with 3.6 blocks.

Spurs Struggle Defensively Without Wembanyama But Guards Keep Team Afloat

San Antonio’s defense has been significantly impacted when Victor Wembanyama is off the floor, allowing 10.8 more points per 100 possessions. Still, strong guard play has kept the team competitive, with the Spurs outscoring opponents by 1.5 points per 100 possessions even without him.

On Sunday, veteran Luke Kornet stepped into the starting role, delivering 13 points on perfect shooting, 11 rebounds, three blocks and a plus-13 rating. Kornet was specifically targeted in free agency to provide stability in moments like this. Kelly Olynyk and Bismack Biyombo are also expected to absorb additional minutes in the frontcourt as the Spurs adjust to life without their defensive anchor and offensive star.

De’Aaron Fox, recently returned, carried the offense with 28 points and 11 assists against Sacramento, and the Spurs will lean on his production in the coming weeks. Victor Wembanyama joins No. 2 pick Dylan Harper on the injury list with a calf strain, underscoring the team’s depth challenges.

The cautious approach reflects lessons learned across the league, particularly after Tyrese Haliburton’s Achilles tear last season when he attempted to play through calf soreness. Victor Wembanyama was seen postgame wearing a light sleeve over his calf but showed no outward signs of discomfort. With the season long and stakes high, San Antonio is prioritizing patience over risk as they await his return.
