Victor Wembanyama Cleared for Preseason Return After Blood Clot Recovery, Spurs Training Camp Set To Begin Tuesday

Spurs star Victor Wembanyama confirms full health

Victor Wembanyama confirmed Monday that he has been fully cleared after recovering from the blood clot in his right shoulder that sidelined him for the final two months of last season.

“I feel better, I look stronger and the scale says I’m heavier, so everything is a green light,” Wembanyama said at Spurs media day. The 20-year-old added that he hopes to see significant minutes in preseason action. “I feel like I need to play basketball now,” he said.

Spurs Open Camp With Optimism

San Antonio begins training camp Tuesday, with its preseason opener scheduled for Oct. 6 against a team from China at Frost Bank Center. The Spurs will open the regular season Oct. 22 in Dallas.

Wembanyama’s return is a major boost, but not every player is on the same timeline.

Point guard De’Aaron Fox said he does not expect to be ready for the Oct. 22 season opener due to a right hamstring injury. Fox added he will not play in preseason games.

“I think I’m ready, but I don’t have that expertise,” Fox explained. “I had never had a hamstring injury, so I didn’t know what I was supposed to feel like. Right now I feel great. But I don’t think I’ll be playing opening night.”

Fox did confirm he has fully recovered from offseason surgery to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie.

Harper Also on Hold

Rookie guard Dylan Harper may also miss preseason. He had offseason surgery to repair a partially torn collateral ligament in his left thumb.

Coach Mitch Johnson said the team is taking a cautious approach. “Everything is heading in the right direction. When it’s all the way good, and probably a little overdone on our end medically, then we’ll clear,” Johnson said.

With Victor Wembanyama cleared, the Spurs head into camp bolstered by their young star, even as they wait on key teammates.
