Trae Young Goes Off on Pat Beverley in Response to Veteran’s Provocation

The NBA offseason took another unexpected turn this week. Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young and Patrick Beverley, currently without a club, have been exchanging barbs on podcasts and social media. After receiving a criticism from Beverley, it was Trae’s turn to respond with equally harsh remarks.

On Wednesday, the 37-year-old veteran fired at the Hawks player, ensuring that his former teammates do not see him as a good leader. In addition, he assured that the number 11 “hasn’t won enough yet” to argue with him.

Young then didn’t let it slide, sending a direct message to his controversial opponent. He initially listed the stars Beverley had the opportunity to play alongside throughout his career. He then insinuated that the point guard was carried along by his star teammates, such as LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard, and recalled a famous recent episode from Pat’s career.

“I won play-in games on the road and went to prepare for the playoffs. You won a play-in game at home and were climbing the table and celebrating like it was a championship. […] And all that to, in the end, have only one conference final (on your resume)? What a winning impact you had, huh,” he countered.

Trae Young Downplays Beverley’s Reputation as a Good Defender

Trae Young’s statement didn’t end there. The Atlanta star also cited the example of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The reigning MVP of the regular season, the Finals, and also a champion with the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Canadian was Beverley’s teammate in his first two NBA campaigns, but was subsequently traded to the Thunder.

“You saw what happened when he walked away from you,” Trae said of Shai’s recent success and the veteran’s influence on him. Finally, the Hawks player challenged even Beverley’s reputation as a good defender.

“I know they treated you like a tough defender, a great defender, and your accomplishments prove that you were. But I guarantee you, whenever you were on the court with me, I was never afraid of you. I was never afraid of Patty Bev. […] And as you can see, I’m not afraid of Patty now either,” he continued.

Since Young entered the NBA in 2018, the duo have faced each other seven times. Beverley has the upper hand in head-to-head matches, with four wins. The No. 11, preparing for his eighth professional season, has accumulated four All-Star Game selections and one All-NBA Third Team selection. The veteran, still without a team and nearing the end of his career, has earned three All-Defensive Team appearances in 12 years in the league.
