The San Antonio Spurs managed to halt their brief skid on Sunday, defeating the Sacramento Kings 123–110. While the result provided relief after consecutive losses, the night was marred by the sudden exit of Stephon Castle, who was ruled out at halftime with a hip injury.
San Antonio entered the contest at 8–4, sitting fifth in the Western Conference, and looking to rebound from a narrow defeat to Golden State. With Victor Wembanyama sidelined, Castle was expected to carry a heavier load.
His early struggles, four points and five assists in 16 minutes — quickly gave way to concern when he did not return from the locker room after halftime. Julian Champagnie started the second half, and the Spurs later confirmed Castle would not return.
Despite the setback, San Antonio’s depth delivered. The Spurs shot 54% from the field compared to Sacramento’s 47%, and they held a decisive edge in assists (38–25) and rebounds (46–37).
Their efficiency at the free-throw line also proved critical, converting 83% of attempts against the Kings’ 73%. Sacramento forced more steals (10–7), but San Antonio’s ball movement and offensive rebounding (9–5) tilted the game in their favor.
Stephon Castle’s absence looms large for a team already missing its centerpiece. His chemistry with Victor Wembanyama had been one of the season’s highlights, including a historic night when both recorded 20-point triple-doubles in the same game.
The former UConn standout, last year’s Rookie of the Year, had not missed a game this season until Sunday, averaging 18.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 7.8 assists and 1.8 steals across the first 12 contests.
The Spurs now face uncertainty ahead of Tuesday’s matchup against the Memphis Grizzlies. Stephon Castle availability remains in question, and San Antonio’s backcourt depth will be tested if he is forced to miss extended time.
