The Golden State Warriors’ season took another troubling turn Wednesday night as Stephen Curry limped off in the closing minutes of a 104-100 loss to the Houston Rockets. The team later confirmed Curry suffered a right quad contusion and will undergo an MRI to determine the severity.

Curry’s exit came after a series of collisions in the fourth quarter. With 3:24 remaining, he attempted to draw a charge on Rockets guard Amen Thompson but was knocked down by an elbow and assessed a blocking foul.

On the following possession, Stephen Curry drove for a layup and was called for a charge. Head coach Steve Kerr challenged the ruling, but the call stood. Curry moved slowly afterward, clearly in discomfort, before being waved out by lead medical decision-maker Rick Celebrini.

The injury compounds a difficult stretch for Curry, who earlier this month revealed he had tweaked his right ankle in games against San Antonio and Orlando. He also admitted he was still recovering from an illness that sidelined him from Nov. 5 to Nov. 9. Despite those setbacks, Stephen Curry has remained Golden State’s leading scorer, averaging 27.9 points per game while topping the league with 4.7 made three-pointers.

Kerr Relieved Injury Was Quad, Not Another Ankle or Knee Setback

Steve Kerr acknowledged the impact of Curry’s absence. “When I heard it was a quad, I was actually relieved. Better than an ankle or a knee. If Steph has to miss time? It obviously changes everything — our rotations, how we’re playing, and who we are playing through. We’ll see,” he said.

Curry’s history with ankle injuries looms large. During his first three seasons, he underwent two surgeries to address instability and missed most of the 2011-12 campaign after five sprains. The Warriors know managing his health carefully is essential to maximizing his availability deep into his age-37 season.

Golden State sits eighth in the Western Conference after a grueling schedule that has already included three back-to-backs and 12 road games. The loss to Houston highlighted recurring issues, as the Warriors allowed 25 offensive rebounds and faltered in key moments.

Jonathan Kuminga provided a rare bright spot, scrimmaging earlier in the day and aiming to return Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans. His comeback could help offset Curry’s absence, but the team’s outlook hinges on MRI results.
