San Antonio Spurs Record Best Start in Franchise History with 107-101 Win Over Miami Heat

The San Antonio Spurs scripted history as they recorded a 107-101 win over the Miami Heat on Thursday, October 30. Following the victory, the Spurs are 5-0, creating a record for the best start to a regular season in the history of the franchise. Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with a game-high performance of 27 points, 18 rebounds, and six assists. Apart from him, Stephon Castle dropped 21 points, six rebounds, and eight assists, while Devin Vassell came up with 17 points.

The Spurs, in their 53-year history have won five NBA championships, matched a league record with 22 consecutive postseason appearances as well as 21 winning streaks of 10-plus games. However, before this game, their best season start was 4-0, which happened four times. However, surprisingly, they were one of the three franchises along with the Miami Heat and the Sacramento Kings to not have five straight wins in the beginning of the season.

In fact this fact was something that left Wembanyama perplexed, and following their victory over the Toronto Raptors, the 7-foot-4 revealed that he was surprised to learn it. “Spurs never went 5-0? No… I’m surprised. I’m really surprised because the Spurs have the highest winning percentage in like the last 30 years, or whatever, right? Oh… let’s beat that record,” he said in a press conference.

How are San Antonio Spurs Doing so Well in the 2025-26 Season?

The San Antonio Spurs were one of the worst performing teams in the 2024-25 season. They finished the season in the 13th spot in the West with a 34-48 win-loss record. One of the biggest reasons for their poor campaign was Victor Wembanyama’s deep vein thrombosis diagnosis. It sidelined him for the remainder of the campaign in February.

However, the 21-year-old underwent rigorous and holistic training in his offseason, playing soccer in Costa Rica and Tokyo, to spending time at a spiritual retreat in China, and more. And it goes without saying that Wembanyama’s transformation is the center of Spurs’ unbeaten start. The 21-year-old is leading San Antonio’s youthful roster from the front and averaging around 30 points per game and sitting atop the rebounding and blocks’ charts. In fact, he is already leading the MVP charts.

Apart from him, reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, and rookie Dylan Harper have directly jumped into the spotlight and have been playing beyond their experience and age. While Castle is averaging 18.8 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game, Harper has posted 14.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.

The Spurs, at one point of time, had veterans like David Robinson, Avery Johnson and later Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, who recorded at least 50 games for 18 straight seasons. However, their current roster is built around the Frenchman and a fearless young core which is ready to take risks. And, we think it is one of the biggest reasons for their comeback.
