Russell Westbrook has shared an important update on his fitness status ahead of a long off season. The point guard will be undergoing surgery on his right hand following multiple ligament tears during this season.

Throughout the playoffs, the veteran guard was visibly taped up, managing through pain while frequently shifting in and out of the Nuggets’ rotation. His availability also affected Denver Nuggets’ chances in the NBA Playoffs 2025.

Westbrook made an announcement regarding opting for a surgery. Though, the right-hand surgery isn’t expected to keep him out for long. Denver Nuggets management suggested that the veteran will join training before the start of the next season.

Westbrook appeared in 75 games this season — his highest total since 2021-22 — averaging 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 6.1 assists. In his last game of the season against the OKC Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals, Russell Westbrook hit 6 points with 2-7 Field goals.

Franchises Eye Veteran Before Player Option Deadline

Russell Westbrook’s future remains uncertain as his regular contract is going to run out with the Denver Nuggets. However, he does have a player option worth $3.3 million. Westbrook will have time till June 29 to opt in.

The 36-year-old is being monitored by multiple NBA franchises ahead of the summer. The nine time All-Star star has never won an NBA title and is desperate to add the trophy to his name. His championship window is closing with a decline in fitness. Westbrook, like Nikola Jokic will want the front office to do better to transform the current roster.

However, if that doesn’t happen, Russell Westbrook does have options. The Miami Heat are reportedly looking to add the Nuggets star on a veteran minimum, but their rebuild phase doesn’t align well with Westbrook’s win-now strategy. It remains to be seen what kind of decision Russell Westbrook takes in the summer that could reshape his legacy.
