Philadelphia 76ers’ Paul George Inches Toward NBA Return, Joel Embiid Avoids Major Injury

Akash

The Philadelphia 76ers entered Tuesday night’s matchup against the Boston Celtics with uncertainty surrounding two of their biggest stars, Paul George and Joel Embiid. Doctors were present at the arena to evaluate both players, but head coach Nick Nurse made clear before tipoff that no official word would be available until after the game.

Following a narrow 102-100 defeat to Boston, the Sixers released an update on George’s status. According to the team, Paul George is in the final stage of his return-to-play plan. His recovery centers on strengthening his left quadricep through conditioning and on-court basketball activities. He will be re-evaluated later this week, leaving his debut still on hold.

Embiid’s situation was addressed separately. Nurse confirmed that the center underwent imaging Tuesday morning after reporting soreness. The results showed no structural damage, and Joel Embiid is now considered day-to-day.

His absence against the Celtics was precautionary, as the discomfort was not tied to a specific play. Joel Embiid had managed his workload carefully since the start of the 2025-26 season, missing games only for rest. Through six appearances, he has averaged 19.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists.

Embiid’s Sudden Soreness Raises Short-Term Concerns

The setback for Embiid comes unexpectedly, given his steady start to the year. Nurse emphasized that the soreness was sudden and unrelated to prior issues. The Philadelphia 76ers will continue to monitor his progress closely, with his availability for upcoming games uncertain.

George’s recovery has been a longer process. He revealed before training camp that he would not be ready to participate immediately, missing the entire preseason. Since joining Philadelphia, Paul George has faced repeated injury challenges.

Last season, he appeared in 41 games, averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 35 percent from beyond the arc. His absence has stretched into the new campaign, leaving the Sixers without his veteran presence.

The timeline for both stars remains unclear. Philadelphia 76ers will return to action Friday in NBA Cup play against the Detroit Pistons, but whether Embiid or George will be available is still in question. The Sixers’ ability to compete in the short term hinges on how quickly their two leaders can return to the floor.
