Luka Doncic embraces leadership
Luka Doncic is keeping his focus as the Los Angeles Lakers prepare to open the NBA season without LeBron James. Speaking to reporters, the All-NBA guard made it clear the team can’t dwell on the star forward’s absence, urging a “next man up” mentality while the 40-year-old recovers from sciatica.
“It’s a big change. He’s a great player. He can help us a lot,” Doncic said, via Dave McMenamin. “But at the end of the day, our mentality needs to be next man up. We’ve got a group of guys that’s been practicing and hopefully LeBron can join us as soon as possible. We need him, but our mentality has to be next man up. I just want to play basketball, nothing less, nothing more. Whatever it takes to win.”
While Luka Doncic has quickly become the center of attention in Los Angeles, he understands that the Lakers’ success depends heavily on the health of LeBron James. The veteran forward’s durability remains a question mark, with his recovery timeline set for the next three weeks.

King James suffered a sciatica injury two months ago, and the pain has yet to subside. As he continues his rehabilitation, the four-time NBA champion will miss opening night for the first time in his career. It’s a minor setback, but one that comes after an offseason filled with optimism about his readiness for another season.
While the Lakers could easily panic without their leader, Luka Doncic has stepped up to ensure the team stays steady. Now in better shape and conditioning, he looks ready to shoulder the responsibility and keep Los Angeles competitive until LeBron returns.
Instead of viewing the situation as a loss, Luka Doncic wants the Lakers to rally together. He believes this period is an opportunity for players like Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, and Deandre Ayton to elevate their play and maintain the team’s rhythm.
As LeBron James enters his 23rd season, stretches like these will test how well the Lakers can adapt without relying solely on his presence. If the Lakers can hold their ground without LeBron, they’ll emerge stronger.
