This season, the MVP race is extremely close and even though Shai Gilgeous Alexander is the current favorite to win the MVP award, what Nikola Jokic is doing this season, has been nothing short of sensational. Last season we saw Nikola Jokic win his third straight MVP award, and it is more or less clear who the best player in the world currently is. With that being said, let’s look at the top 5 contenders for the MVP award for the 2024-2025 season.
Shai Gilgeous Alexander is leading the MVP race currently, and right now it looks like he’s a clear runaway favorite. He’s averaging 32.7 points per game this season, along with 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 assists. SGA has led the Thunder to the best record in the NBA and they are currently sitting at the top of the West with a 66-14 record. They have locked home court advantage through out the playoffs, and the OKC Thunder are also the favorites to come out of the West. Gilgeous Alexander has simply been unstoppable this season, whether it’s mid-range, post-ups, three ball, his finishing inside, and the ability to draw fouls.

If SGA ends up winning the MVP award, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have produced four active MVP winners in the last 11 seasons, and despite Sam Presti and the Thunder’s success drafting incredible players, we wonder when will their first champion be lifted. However, now that the Thunder are the best team in the NBA, we are hoping to see them lifting the Larry O’Brian Trophy this year.
Nikola Jokic is arguably the best player in the world currently, and his stats have improved even further than what he averaged in his MVP season last year. While we do not look at Jokic as a score first player, since the Nuggets have struggled to win games, Jokic has upped his scoring averages too this season. Jokic is currently averaging a triple double for the season with 29.8 points per game, 10.2 assists, and 12.8 rebounds per game. Only two players in the history of the NBA have averaged a triple double in legend Oscar Robertson and Jokic’s current teammate Russell Westbrook.
The only reason why Jokic is not the current favorite is because of his team’s record, as the Nuggets have struggled with consistency on the offensive side of the court without Jokic, and their lackluster defense which is the biggest concern going into the playoffs.
Giannis is also quietly having one of the most dominant seasons averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. The Greek freak is also averaging 1.2 blocks, 0.9 steals, and shooting 60.2 percent from the floor. Similar to Jokic, Antetokounmpo’s team, the Milwaukee Bucks, have struggled to win games and Bucks are currently holding the 5th seed in the East. While 5th seed in not bad, but for a team like the Bucks, who are built to win now, that is quite a disappointment this season. The Bucks haven’t played in the Eastern Conference Finals since the 2021 season, and for the most part it is because of the injuries. If Greek Freak stays healthy, and the Bucks get Damian Lillard back, we cannot tell how far they can go. Because we all need to remember than Antetokounmpo is also a top-5 player in the NBA currently and one of the best players in the world.

While Jayson Tatum is having somewhat of a down year in terms of his scoring average as it currently stand at 27.0, there is no doubt in out minds that he clearly deserves to be on this list. Tatum is averaging career best 6.0 assists this season and has been facilitating more than usual. The Boston Celtics are one of, if not, the favorites to win back-to-back titles this season, and they have some of the deepest benches with extremely talented players. The Celtics are extremely good from top to bottom, and when you have talent levels like that, it is hard to stand out from the rest of the pack. That is exactly the story for Tatum’s MVP chances. However, more than the MVP trophy, Tatum wants to win another title and that is what his focus has always been towards.
Mitchell is one of the best scorers in the NBA currently and has helped the Cleveland Cavaliers becoming a serious title contender this season. Last season the offense mostly revolved around Mitchell and even though his scoring averages looked terrific, the Cavs were not the team that they are this season. So after the Cavs hired Kenny Atkinson, Mitchell’s usage rate is now the lowest it’s been since he joined the Cavs with 30.9. This has worked wonders for the team and their success.
Mitchell is currently averaging 24.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game, and even though his averages may not look the best, there’s no denying that he helped the Cavs achieve the best record in the East currently with 63-16.
