Mikal Bridges make a bet on himself by turning down contract extension from the Knicks

Mikal Bridges has declined a two-year, $60 million contract extension offer from the New York Knicks according to The Athletic’s James Edwards.

This decision, made ahead of the October 2024 deadline, is reportedly based on Bridges’ desire for a longer-term deal, which he can explore next year.

Bridges is currently on a four-year, $90.9 million deal, which he signed with the Phoenix Suns in 2021.

The Knicks, who acquired him in a trade, will now need to navigate future contract negotiations with Bridges, who remains central to their plans.

Bridges’ choice likely reflects his value in the league, especially after his key role with the Brooklyn Nets and high expectations following his trade to New York. By declining this shorter-term offer, Bridges is setting himself up for more flexibility and potentially a larger payday in 2025

In the 2023-24 NBA season, Mikal Bridges continued to showcase his versatility and consistency, posting impressive averages of 19.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.

His shooting efficiency remained solid, hitting 47.5% from the field and 38.6% from beyond the arc, further establishing himself as one of the league’s top two-way players.

The New-York Knicks will start their season tonight against the defending Champions, the Boston Celtics.
