Frank Vogel officially joins the Dallas Mavericks’ coaching staff, reuniting with Jason Kidd

The Dallas Mavericks have officially added veteran coach Frank Vogel to their sideline staff, with full backing from head coach Jason Kidd. The move comes amidst changes taking place both on and off the court for the Western Conference side.

Frank Vogel previously collaborated with Jason Kidd during their championship-winning run with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. The duo share a close professional bond having guided the Lakers to their 17th NBA championship in 2020. Back then, Kidd served as Vogel’s assistant and now the roles are reversed, with Vogel joining Kidd’s staff in Dallas.

Vogel brings a plethora of NBA coaching experience having led coaching staffs at five different franchises. He was head coach at the Indiana Pacers (2011-2016), Orlando Magic (2016-2018), Los Angeles Lakers (2019-2022), and the Phoenix Suns (2023-24).

Throughout the 2024–25 season, Vogel had already been serving as a consultant for the Mavericks, laying groundwork for a full-time return. The current deal reflects the impact that Frank Vogel had in Dallas. Jason Kidd and Frank Vogel offer contrasting yet complementary skill sets.

Kidd is respected for his offensive creativity, particularly in crafting playmaking systems and backcourt movement. Whereas, Vogel built his reputation on defensive discipline, engineering some of the league’s most efficient units during his time with Indiana and Los Angeles.

Mavericks Development Coach Shifts to Orlando

The Dallas Mavericks have also had an exit from their coaching staff. Developmental coach God Shammgod has accepted a new role with the Orlando Magic, joining their bench as an assistant coach. Shammgod who joined Mavericks in 2016 has played important roles in the rise of players like Luka Doncic.

He worked with Kyrie Irving and also Kristaps Porzingis in their early career. Now, the 49-year-old will work closely with Anthony Black and Jase Richardson to further develop the Orlando Magic roster.

Shammgod also emphasized cultural awareness and emotional intelligence as tools to enhance a player’s leadership presence on the court. This will aid Magic players who come from a diverse ethnic background.
