Luka Doncic “Appreciates” LeBron James Letting Him Take the Final Shot in Lakers’ Win Over Pacers

Luka had possession during the final play.

The Lakers defeated the Pacers on Wednesday with a buzzer-beating tip-in from LeBron James at the end of a hard-fought game (120-119). Despite being well-contained by Indiana’s defense (scoring just 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting), the King, delivering his eighth career buzzer-beater in the NBA, found the strength to rescue the Lakers on the court of Gainbridge Fieldhouse. After the game, Luka Doncic, who had possession during the final play, expressed his gratitude for LeBron’s trust.

“When I grabbed the rebound, he asked for the ball. But I wasn’t comfortable enough to give it to him. With nine seconds left, I passed it to Austin Reaves. Reaves gave it to LeBron, who passed it back to me. That shows the level of trust he has in me. I really appreciate that he let me take the last shot. It was a good shot. I missed it, but LeBron was there.”

Pleased with the outcome, the 2018 EuroLeague MVP emphasized the importance of securing a win against a tough opponent.

“We really needed this victory. Indiana is a good team, coming off five straight wins. They play hard, they play fast. It was a tough game. So when I saw LeBron’s shot go in, I felt relieved and happy.”

LeBron James’ clutch play proved crucial, but the Lakers’ game plan ultimately paid off, with Luka Doncic showcasing his signature aggressive playstyle.

“This is a return to who I really am. When I drive, it’s hard to stop us. Defenders collapse into the paint, and that gives me the opportunity to kick the ball out. I focused on that tonight, and it’s a good thing for me and for the team.”

While the 2019 Rookie of the Year is pleased with his performance and the Lakers’ win in Indiana, he remains aware that building chemistry with his new teammates will take time.

“I still have a lot of work to do. I’m not entirely sure what’s expected of me yet—what Austin Reaves and LeBron James want exactly. Those two have played together for three or four years, so they know each other well. It’s going to take time for me. But I’ll watch film and adapt to the situation.”

Speaking about his teammates, Luka Doncic made sure to highlight both LeBron James and Austin Reaves, who once again played a crucial role against Indiana with 24 points, four rebounds, and five assists.

“It’s incredible. He never complains. No matter his role—whether he’s the first, second, or third option—he just keeps playing his game. It’s amazing. He’s the kind of player you want on your team.”

Now tied with Memphis for third place in the Western Conference standings, the Lakers will look to continue their momentum on Thursday against a surging Chicago team.
