Los Angeles Lakers Slump to Golden State Warriors on Opening Night Despite Luka Doncic’s 43-Point Outburst

The Warriors kicked off the 2025-26 season with a bang!

The Los Angeles Lakers failed to make the most of their home-court advantage as they slumped to the Golden State Warriors 119-109 in their season opener on Tuesday, October 21. Luka Doncic, who was playing his first season opener as a Laker turned heads with his 43-point performance. He grabbed 12 rebounds and nine assists in 41 minutes for the hosts. Doncic is now the first Lakers player to have 40+ points in a season opener since Kobe Bryant in 2007.

Apart from Doncic, Austin Reaves also shouldered scoring responsibility for the Lakers in LeBron James, who is dealing with a sciatica injury. Reaves dropped 26 points, five rebounds, and nine assists, while DeAndre Ayton came up with 10 points, and six rebounds. For the Warriors, Jimmy Butler, playing his first season opener with the Dubs, led charts with 31 points.

Butler grabbed five rebounds, and dished out four assists, while shooting 7-of-14 from the field, and 16-of-16 from the free throw line. Stephen Curry dropped 23 points, and recorded one rebound, with four assists while Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield came up with 17 points each.

The Golden State Warriors capitalized on LeBron James’ absence and took early control of the game. While they recorded a six-point lead in the opening quarter, the Lakers narrowed the gap to one point before the break. A total of 27 turnovers and 27 combined fouls were committed in the first 24 minutes. Marcus Smart alone had four fouls by halftime, while Draymond Green picked the first technical of the season after arguing with officials from the bench.

They call him Buddy Buckets for a reason.

Following the break, the Warriors quickly went for a 16-4 to open the second half and built a 71-58 lead. The Lakers, who managed to get themselves back in the game by the second quarter, looked clueless in the third. The gap widened to 17 points in the second half, and it was only Luka Doncic, who kept the Lakers floating in the quarter by posting 13 points and get the team within 10 points.

The Warriors entered the final frame with a 90-79 lead, and while the Lakers hoped for a better start to the quarter, things didn’t really go their way. However, Doncic’s effort got the Lakers within 12 points before a 9-0 run by them cut the lead to six points. Despite remarkable effort from Doncic and Reeves, the Lakers failed to move past the victory line.
