Lakers vs Spurs: 3 Key Takeaways as Luka Doncic’s 35 Points Guide Lakers to Fifth Straight Win

Garima Ranawat

The Lakers are now 7-2 in the ongoing season.

The Los Angeles Lakers recorded their fifth straight win as they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 118-116 in a tight NBA Western Conference clash at home. Luka Doncic, once again, led the Lakers’ scoring sheet with 35 points, 13 assists, and nine rebounds, while Deandre Ayton dropped 22 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Rui Hachimura also contributed in double digits as he came up with 15 points and two rebounds.

On the other hand, Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Stephon Castle and Jeremy Sochan came up with 16 points each while Julian Champagnie and Harrison Barnes came up with 14 points each. As NBA fans witnessed another thrilling contest on Wednesday night, let’s see what are the takeaways from the game.

Luka Doncic’s Near Triple-Double Heroics Overpower Lakers

Luka Doncic dropped game-high 35 points, including 22 points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals in the first half. He now has the most 20/5/5 halves in recorded history. His offensive heroics overpowered the Lakers to a clutch-time win over the Spurs despite missing the likes of LeBron James and Austin Reaves. With the win, the Slovenian extended his unbeaten streak over Victor Wembanyama to 5-0. The 27-year-old, who is playing his first full regular season with the Lakers, is now averaging 40.0 ppg, 11.0 rpg, and 9.2 apg through five games.

Victor Wembanyama’s Foul-Fest Takes Spurs Down

Victor Wembanyama, who is averaging 26.7 ppg, 13.7 rpg, and 3.2 apg, dropped another solid game with 19 points and eight rebounds. However, with his fifth foul under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter, Wembanyama was sidelined, limiting his rim protection during the Lakers’ surge. The game tonight had 66 personal fouls (36-Spurs and 30 Lakers) called with 84 free throws (44-Lakers, 40-Spurs). The aggressive trapping of the Spurs backfired as their physicality exposed their young roster.

Los Angeles Lakers’ Depth Shine Despite Austin Reaves’ Absence

The Lakers were without Austin Reaves for the second consecutive game with groin injury, and James with a sciatica injury. During their absence, the Lakers leaned on players such as Rui Hachimura, who dropped 15 points and two rebounds, and Jake LaRavia, who had eight points and six rebounds. The Lakers winning the game with key injuries against the West’s hottest team highlights their sustainability.
