Lakers vs Heat: Three Key Takeaways as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves’ Combined 55-Point Efforts Edge Lakers Over Heat

Garima Ranawat

The Lakers are now 5-2 in the ongoing season.

The Los Angeles Lakers continued their winning streak and handed a 130-120 defeat to the Miami Heat in a fast-paced NBA 2025-26 matchup at home, Crypto.com Arena on Sunday, November 2. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves combined 55 points as the Lakers posted their fifth win of the season. Doncic grabbed 10 rebounds, and 10 assists to record the 83rd triple double of his career, whereas Reaves grabbed eight rebounds, and 11 assists for the winners.

Apart from them, Jake LaRavia had 25 points, eight rebounds, and three assists for the Lakers, while Rui Hachimura, Jaxson Hayes dropped 15 points each. On the flip side, the Miami Heat slumped to their third defeat of the season, despite Jamie Jaquez Jr. dropping 31 points, combined with eight rebounds, and four assists. Bam Adebayo and Pelle Larsson added 17 points each for the Heat.

Here are the three takeaways from the Sunday-night thriller.

Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves’ Offensive Synergy Overpowers Miami Heat

It wasn’t the usual-scoring night for the Los Angeles Lakers’ superstar Luka Doncic. Averaging 45.3 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game, the Slovenian scored below 30-points on Sunday and had an off scoring night. Doncic was shooting just 9-of-22 from the field and 1-of-11 from the three-point range. On the other hand, Reaves was shooting 9-of-22 from the field and 4-of-14 from beyond the arc. Despite this, both managed to post 55 combined points and pushed the Lakers’ offense. In addition, the growing chemistry between Doncic and Reaves has allowed the Lakers to maintain consistency, building pressure on their rivals, including the Heat.

Jake LaRavia’s Key Contributions Power Lakers

Apart from a key contribution from the starters, Lakers’ bench player Jake LaRavia put up 25 points, along with eight rebounds and three assists. The third-year forward, who moved to the Lakers from the Sacramento Kings, shot 10-of-13 from the field and 2-of-3 from the three-point line in 35 minutes off the bench. Not only this, but in the last three games, he has averaged 21.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per game, while shooting 78.1% from the field and 66.7% from the three-point range. This shows how starters and the Lakers’ bench players gel up to contribute for the team.

Lakers’ Maintain Defensive Versatility Amid LeBron James’ Absence

The Los Angeles Lakers have been without LeBron James even before the preseason. However, even without him, they have been faring well in the season, posting a record of 5-2 early in the season. On Sunday, after a high-scoring first half, the Lakers stepped in with a better defensive approach. By the end of the game, they had limited the Heat to 27.3% from the three-point range and 69.4% from the free-throw line, while forcing 15 turnovers. In fact, Bronny James, who ended up scoring only two points, has had a great impact on the team with two assists and three steals. He also had a great defensive night, and provided the team with a much-needed boost off the bench.
