The Los Angeles Lakers began their return from the offseason by announcing head coach Redick’s contract extension on Thursday. The deal, revealed in a news conference, confirmed the organization’s continued commitment to JJ Redick as the team prepares to open training camp next week.

General manager Rob Pelinka delivered the announcement alongside Redick, highlighting the decision as a statement about the direction of the franchise. “We think he’s a special coach with a special voice that’s really helping us define the culture of Lakers excellence,” Pelinka said.

JJ Redick initially signed a four-year, $32-million contract last year to begin his first head coaching role. In his debut season, he led the Lakers to a 50-32 record and the third seed in the Western Conference before the team fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the opening round of the playoffs.

Rob Pelinka described the new deal as part of an “intentional and productive offseason,” emphasizing stability and long-term planning. He pointed to roster additions, including center Deandre Ayton and perimeter players Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia, as moves designed to strengthen the core built around Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

LeBron James opted into the final year of his contract, while Doncic signed a three-year extension in August. The combination gives the Los Angeles Lakers a clear structure moving forward under Redick’s leadership.

Questions Around Team Balance Remain for JJ Redick

After acquiring Luka Doncic in a blockbuster midseason trade in February, the Lakers enter their first full season with him and LeBron James sharing the floor. Balancing the demands of the 40-year-old veteran and the 26-year-old star will be among the central tasks for JJ Redick.

The head coach said he met twice with LeBron during the offseason, describing their discussions as productive and focused on setting expectations.

Redick acknowledged that the transition into his role last year came with unique challenges, including a midseason roster shift, relocation for his family, and moving directly from broadcasting into coaching.

Despite those challenges, he kept the team competitive and now emphasizes daily commitment. “We’re going to ask guys to be in championship shape, have championship communication and championship habits,” JJ Redick said.
