Jaren Jackson Jr. Suffers Serious Injury One Day After Million-Dollar Extension

JJJ and the Grizzlies agreed to a five-year, $240 million contract extension

From heaven to hell overnight. On Tuesday (1), journalist Chris Haynes reported that Jaren Jackson Jr. suffered an injury to his big toe and will need to undergo surgery. Thus, the Memphis Grizzlies power forward will be out of basketball activities for an indefinite period, shortly after signing a million-dollar extension with the franchise. According to the journalist, the injury occurred outside the Grizzlies facilities.

On Monday, at the start of the 2025 free agency period, Jaren Jackson Jr. and the Grizzlies agreed to a five-year, $240 million contract extension. That would put his salary at nearly $50 million per season, a hefty sum but a necessary one for a player of his caliber. However, what really has some people scratching their heads about this contract is Jaren Jackson’s health.

That’s because the power forward has been suffering from injuries basically since he entered the NBA. Thus, only twice in his career has JJJ played more than 66 games in a season and the new guaranteed amount caught the attention of fans. However, even with the history, the new injury certainly took everyone by surprise. In 2024-25, the Grizzlies player averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, being an All-Star for the second time in his career.

The Memphis Grizzlies’ Offseason So Far

The main move was the trade of Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. In return, the Magic sent Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a swap pick to Memphis.

Additionally, despite losing Luke Kennard, the Grizzlies brought in Ty Jerome, formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers, and re-signed Santi Aldama, an important center for the team.
