With the Feb. 5 trade deadline looming, Ja Morant’s tenure in Memphis may be nearing its conclusion. The Grizzlies’ mercurial point guard, long considered the face of the franchise, is now at the center of mounting speculation that his time in Tennessee could be cut short.

Oddsmakers have shifted dramatically in recent days. For weeks, Memphis sat atop the board as the most likely destination for Morant to remain.

The Heat’s rise in the betting market underscores the growing belief that Morant could soon be wearing a different uniform. Miami, currently 21-19 and sitting eighth in the Eastern Conference, has reached the postseason six straight years, including Finals appearances in 2020 and 2023. A move for Morant would signal a bold attempt to return to the NBA’s summit.

On the floor, Morant’s production remains solid but inconsistent. He is averaging 19 points, 7.6 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and one steal per game this season. Yet his shooting has dipped to career lows. He is hitting just 40.1 percent from the field and 20.8 percent from beyond the arc, despite attempting 4.3 threes per contest. For a guard expected to stretch defenses, those numbers are troubling.

Availability has been an even greater concern. Morant has played in only 18 of Memphis’ 39 games this season, with the team holding a 17-22 record. Injuries and suspensions have plagued his career, limiting him to 50 games last season, nine in 2023-24, 61 in 2022-23, 57 in 2021-22, 63 in 2020-21, and 67 in his rookie campaign. He has never reached 68 games in a single year.

The Grizzlies announced Saturday that Morant will be reevaluated in three weeks due to an elbow issue, adding another layer of uncertainty. Despite his undeniable talent, his inability to stay on the court consistently has raised questions about his long-term fit in Memphis.

Financially, Morant remains a major commitment. He is in the third year of a five-year, $197.2 million contract that runs through the 2027-28 season. That deal ties him to the Grizzlies for the foreseeable future unless a trade materializes.

The precedent for moving a franchise point guard has already been set this season. On Jan. 7, Atlanta dealt Trae Young to Washington, proving that even cornerstone players are not immune to relocation. If Morant follows suit, the odds suggest his next stop could be in the Eastern Conference, where Miami appears poised to make a push.
