Ime Udoka Inks Lucrative Extension After Leading Rockets to Top-Two Seed in 2025

In 2021-22, Ime Udoka transformed the Boston Celtics in his first season as head coach, guiding them to the NBA Finals with a 51-31 record and league’s top-ranked defense. His coaching style and defensive schemes elevated stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, earning widespread praise from media and the rest of the league. However, Udoka was suspended and fired before the 2022-23 season due to violation of team policies, a sensitive matter that ended his Celtics tenure abruptly despite his on-court success.

Hired by the Houston Rockets in April of 2023, Udoka inherited a team who were nowhere close to even making the playoffs, with just 59 wins across three seasons. In two years, Udoka orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, leading Houston to a 41-41 record in the 2023-24 season and a 52-30 finish in 2024-25, securing their first top-two seed in the West since 2018, when James Harden was still around. His defensive minded gameplan lifted the Rockets to fifth in defensive efficiency, making them a playoff contender for the first time in five-years.

Long-Term Deal Signals Rockets’ Faith in Udoka

Udoka signed a long-term contract extension with the Rockets, making him one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches with an eight-figure annual salary, as per ESPN’s Sham Charania. The deal reflects Houston’s commitment to Udoka after he led them to 93 wins over two seasons, which is a stark contrast to just 59 wins in the three prior years. Despite a first-round playoff loss to the Golden State Warriors in 2025, Udoka’s impact, developing players like Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green, earned him a 2025 NBA Coach of the Year finalist nod.

The extension follows right after the New York Knicks’ failed attempt to interview Udoka, with Houston denying the request. The Rockets also re-signed center Steven Adams to a three-year $39 million deal and face a June 29 deadline on Fred Vanfleet’s $44.9 million option. This move to sign Udoka clearly signals a long-term commitment towards the coach and the team, as the Rockets will try to go deeper into the playoffs next season. With coach Udoka, on-the-rise stars like Sengun, and Amen Thompson, the Rockets are emerging as a threat in the Western Conference, once again, after years of rebuilding post the James Harden trade.
