A deeper look at the family story powering Spain’s next NBA-bound prospect
Unlike many international prospects, Hugo Gonzalez has followed a unique developmental path. He stayed in Europe and developed his game rather than moving to the States for the NCAA program. His basketball journey officially began at the age of 9, sparked by the environment he grew up in. The Boston Celtics selected Hugo Gonzalez with the 28th pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

It was his parents’ deep connection with the sport that played a vital role in guiding his career choice. Gonzalez officially entered Real Madrid’s basketball scene, competing for both the U18 squad and the reserve side in Liga EBA. The guard also participated in the Adidas next generation tournament and averaged 17.5 points.
He continued playing for Real Madrid’s senior team in the Liga ACB and EuroLeague. In the 2024-25 season, Hugo Gonzalez appeared in 57 games across all competitions, averaging 10 minutes per game. In February, Gonzalez earned his first senior national team cap in a game against Latvia, where he put up 11 points in limited minutes.
