The NBA is one of the most enthralling and prestigious leagues across the world. Created in 1949, following the merger of the BAA and ABA, the NBA captivates the attention of fans from across the globe with its agility, pace and its exhilarating action. Over the years, league has delivered intense contests and iconic players.

From Michael Jordan to the modern-day great LeBron James, Luka Doncic to Kobe ‘Mamba’ Bryant, the world has seen some of the greatest players lacing up their sneakers and entered their names into the NBA books of all-time greats.

One of the main reasons behind the popularity of the NBA is the duration of a fixture. The duration of a game in basketball generally depends on the league and the level of play. While a college basketball game is 40 minutes long, the one in the NBA lasts eight minutes longer.

It means, each fixture in an NBA game is 48 minutes longer with, each game being divided into four quarters, of 12 minutes each. However, from the tip off to the final whistle, a game easily goes beyond two to two and a half hours. It is because of multiple factors, including breaks, timeouts as well as overtime in a couple of matches.

During a game, five players are present on the court at all times. However, the coaches are required to make a rotation among all the players that would total for 240 minutes played for the entire roster.

NBA Halftime Duration

The duration between two halves of an NBA game is 15 minutes. However, a duration of two minutes and thirty seconds is provided between two quarters and before the beginning of the overtime. The scenario in a televised game is a bit different. Here, three minutes and thirty seconds are provided between the quarters and two minutes, thirty seconds before the overtime.

It brings us to the duration of overtime in the NBA. A total of five minutes are allocated for overtime. However, if the teams end up in a tie after the overtime, the process is repeated.
