Despite the injury, Knueppel earned praise from Klay Thompson for his two-way mindset
Kon Knueppel was having his best Summer League performance yet before an unfortunate injury cut his night short. The rookie scored 17 points in 21 minutes of action that took his side into the finals on Sunday.
But his outing ended early after a head injury sustained while diving for a loose ball forced him off the court. While going for a loose ball, the rookie dived but got hurt on his head. He was able to get up and walk back to the locker room by himself.

Many are impressed by the efforts of Kon Knueppel as he went for the loose ball when his side was up by 26 points. The dive, with a 30-point lead, spoke volumes about Knueppel’s grit and commitment. His condition is still being evaluated, and it’s unclear if he’ll suit up for the Hornets in Sunday’s final against the Kings.
The Charlotte Hornets’ youngsters have shown promise as the team finished the group stage with a perfect record. Their draft class that includes Liam McNeely, Sion James, and Ryan Kalkbreener have all put up impressive displays in the Summer League so far.
Dallas Mavericks’ Klay Thompson has showered praise on Kon Knueppel for his display during the NCAA championship and the NBA Summer League. Knueppel previously revealed he’s modeled his game on Klay Thompson, aiming to become an elite two-way player.
Klay Thompson said, “Thanks for the words of trying to model your game after me. It makes me feel kind of old, but also very appreciative of great young athletes like yourself who are coming to take over the league and carry on the torch of what we started.”
He added, “Never lose that confidence that got you here. I heard you aspire to be a two-way player, and that’s something I prided myself on for a long time. Enjoy your rookie year as much as you can. It will go by faster than you can blink an eye.”
