Grant Williams out indefinitely with torn ACL injury
Charlotte Hornets forward Grant Williams is sidelined indefinitely after tearing the ACL in his right knee, the team announced on Sunday.
The injury occurred during Saturday night’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks, where the Hornets fell 125-119. Williams went down on a drive to the basket late in the fourth quarter with just under four minutes left, as the Bucks led 114-101.
He finished the game with eight points, seven rebounds, and two assists in 32 minutes, shooting 2-for-6 from the field.
The Hornets confirmed that Williams will undergo further evaluation, and the team will share updates when available.
Williams, originally drafted in the first round by the Boston Celtics in 2019, joined the Hornets last season in a midseason trade from the Dallas Mavericks. He quickly became a starter alongside LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Miles Bridges, solidifying his role as a versatile forward.
Despite ESPN’s report that Williams also suffered damage to his meniscus and other knee ligaments, potentially sidelining him for the rest of the season, the Hornets have not officially confirmed these details. The team has only listed him as out indefinitely pending further medical evaluations.
A six-year NBA veteran, Williams has averaged 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in his career. His shooting percentages stand at an efficient 45.2% from the field and 37.7% from beyond the arc.
Before joining the Hornets, Williams played his first four seasons with the Boston Celtics, where he signed a four-year, $53 million deal. Traded to the Dallas Mavericks during the summer of 2023, Williams was later dealt to Charlotte in February 2024.
Williams also had a standout college career at Tennessee, earning the SEC Player of the Year title twice.
“Appreciate all the love and support from those who have reached out,” Williams shared in a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). “Time to go to work. It’s all we can do.”
The 25-year-old forward is expected to undergo surgery soon, with an anticipated recovery time of six to nine months. His perseverance will undoubtedly be tested as he faces a long road to recovery.
Williams’ absence leaves a significant gap in the Hornets’ starting lineup. With his defensive versatility and leadership, he had become an integral part of Charlotte’s rotation. The team will now need to explore adjustments as they aim to remain competitive in his absence.
