Golden State Warriors Make a Roster Addition, Acquire Former Utah Jazz Forward

Gulshan Sharma

Kinsey's professional basketball career picked up steam last season in Salt Lake City.

After a lackluster NBA offseason, largely due to the ongoing Jonathan Kuminga dispute, the Golden State Warriors went for a roster addition. However, the addition isn’t expected to directly impact the NBA’s top team. According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the franchise has signed 25-year-old forward Taevion Kinsey, who is expected to play initially for the G League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

The official announcement came through Santa Cruz itself, confirming a three-way trade involving the Salt Lake City Stars and College Park Skyhawks, which secured Kinsey’s rights for the Warriors’ affiliate team.

Who is Taevion Kinsey? Will He Add Value to Warriors’ Bench Strength?

Kinsey built a solid college basketball career. In five seasons at Marshall, he became the program’s all-time leading scorer, racking up an impressive 2,641 points. His peak came in the 2022-23 season, when he averaged 22.1 points per game, shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 40.4 percent from three, earning him the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year.

Despite his impressive numbers, the forward didn’t hear his name mentioned in the 2023 NBA Draft. Still, he received opportunities with the Utah Jazz, signing a ten-day contract and then a two-way contract. However, he didn’t actually see action last season. Now, he’s seeking a new opportunity with the Warriors.

Kinsey’s professional basketball career picked up steam last season in Salt Lake City. In 34 games, he averaged 24 points per game, shooting 51.9 percent from the field. He also contributed 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 34.8 minutes per game.

This performance caught the attention of the Warriors, who see him as a player capable of growing within the system. Eventually, if he develops defensively as well, he could earn a spot on the main roster. Now, Kinsey will have the chance to prove he can take the next step in his career and turn his standout performances in the G League into a future opportunity in the NBA.
