Domantas Sabonis breaks Victor Wembanyama’s record and makes NBA history against Celtics

The 11th overall in the 2016 NBA draft is averaging 14.2 boards per game in the NBA.

Domantas Sabonis highlighted a 23-point performance to help the Sacramento Kings to a 114-97 victory over the Boston Celtics on Friday night. The 28-year-old also tallied a career-high 28 rebounds in the game and set new records in the NBA.

Sabonis broke the previous record of San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama who had the league’s highest rebound total (23) in a single contest this season. The Kings star also set a new franchise record for most rebounds in a game with 28.

Sabonis’ 28 rebounds break multiple records

As per StatMamba, Domantas Sabonis’s 28 onboards are the highest by an opponent player in a game at Boston. The Previous record was taken by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1971.

Including Boston Celtics players, this is also the most rebounds in a game at Boston since Dave Cowens in 1972. Domantas Sabonis also shattered Kevin Love’s 14-year-old TD Garden rebounding record.

With 28 onboards in the game, Sabonis made into the Lithuanian NBA records. He now leads the Lithuanian records in scoring most points (42), most rebounds (28), and most assists (16). Sabonis is the youngest player ever to play for the national team of Lithuania.

The 3-time NBA All-Star would now eye the national record of most steals and blocks. Sarunas Marciulionis holds the record for most steals (6) and Jonas Valanciunas and Zydrunas Ilgauskas lead the top spot for most blocks (7).

Sabonis posted his 33rd double-double of the season and it was the 24th game of his career when he scored 20 or more rebounds.

Malik Monk added 22 points and 8 assists while and Keegan Murray had 19 for the Kings, who extended their season-high winning streak to six matches. DeMar DeRozan led Kings’ all the scorers with 24 points and nine assists. Rey Lyles also grabbed 11 rebounds off the bench to help Sacramento winning for the first time in Boston after 18 years.

The Kings now improved to 19-19 after parting ways with head coach Mike Brown. They are 6-1 under the new head coach, Doug Christie and 3-0 without star guard De’Aaron Fox. Sacramento are also back at .500 to take ninth spot in the West.
