It’s Been Tough to Watch: Dirk Nowitzki Opens Up on Dallas Mavericks’ Poor Start to 2025-26 Season

The Mavericks are 3-7 in the ongoing season.

Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki shared his honest feelings about the franchise’s poor start to the NBA 2025-26 season. The former forward, who was a part of the Mavericks for over 21 years, didn’t hold back on the team’s current struggles. Notably, the Mavs got off to a horrible start and have struggled through the first ten games of the season. So far, they have managed to register only three wins, the most recent of which came on Saturday, against the Washington Wizards.

Amid their poor form, fans and pundits have started to raise questions and doubts on the leadership and decision making of front office and GM Nico Harrison. Harrison has been once again facing scrutiny for the trade of Luka Doncic in February 2025. However, amidst all this, former Mavericks player Nowitzki revealed his honest feelings about the team’s struggles. “I feel bad for my Mavs fans,” the NBA on Prime analyst said.

“This has been a disastrous start… obviously there’s a hole at point guard and the playmaking position… so there’s a hole at shot creation, there’s a hole at shot-making. We said coming into the season that health is big for them.”

“Obviously, Kyrie is out for a couple more months, and you need AD healthy, Lively getting healthy, and both of those guys have already been out for a while… so it’s just been a disastrous start. They’re practically on pace to have a record bad start on offense… nobody can make shots. It’s been tough to watch.”

Notably, the Mavericks currently sit in the bottom-second spot of the Western Conference standings. They are at the bottom of the league in terms of offensive rating (103.2) and rank 29th in three other offensive categories. They are struggling to find rhythm outside of a promising start from No.1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.

Dirk Nowitzki Shares Offers Advice to Cooper Flagg Amid Mavericks’ Early Struggles

Dirk Nowitzki offered some advice to Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg, who was selected first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. Recently, the 18-year-old opened up about the slump of the Mavericks, saying that this is the most number of losses he has suffered in his career. However, Nowitzki offered advice to Flagg and said, “I would just keep on working. I know you have a tremendous work ethic. So, you work your way through it.”

“You come in the next day. You’re the first in the gym. You get shots up. Get with an assistant coach. Watch film and you just get better. That’s the bottom line. Losing or not, you try to keep a positive attitude. You get there to get better every day. You play every position.” “You had a shot to get the game-winner the other day, or at least tie the game at the end — that’s great for you — great reps to be in that position. So, keep on working, my friend. Keep your head up and things will be OK.”

While Flagg has been delivering decent performances for the Mavericks, the franchise and coaches have seemingly started to expect more from him. However, considering that the Mavericks have finally ended their losing streak, we can expect them to continue their form. In fact, Anthony Davis is also expected to return from his injury layoff, which would help them moving ahead and get back on track.
