Dallas Mavericks to Explore Trade Options for Klay Thompson After Horrific Start to 2025-26 Season

The Dallas Mavericks, who are having a horrific start to the 2025-26 NBA season are reportedly considering moving their shooting star Klay Thompson. According to the reports by ClutchPoint’s Brett Siegel, the ongoing struggles of the four-time champion amid the Mavericks’ awful start to the current season have forced head coach Jason Kidd to demote him to the bench. As the Mavs continue their struggles to move upwards in the standings, the franchise has reportedly decided to move ahead from their $50 million guard.

They will explore Thompson’s value ahead of the February 5 trade deadline. Siegel reported, “It is no secret that Harrison and the Mavericks’ front office will explore what return exists for Klay Thompson before the trade deadline, and several teams are monitoring Daniel Gafford’s status, sources said.” Notably, the five-time All-Star joined the Mavericks last year after ending a 13-year stint with the Golden State Warriors.

Having won four championships alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, Thompson signed a three-year deal with the Mavericks last season worth $50 million, reportedly turning down a $80 million offer from the Los Angeles Lakers. In the ongoing season, he is averaging 8.5 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game while shooting 34.2% from the field.

Should Golden State Warriors Consider Reuniting with Klay Thompson?

Klay Thompson parted ways with the Golden State Warriors after 13 successful years, with four championship trophies, six trips to the NBA Finale as well as five NBA All-Star appearances. He parted ways with the Dubs after contract disagreements, and as per reports, he felt disrespected when the Golden State offered him half of what Draymond Green received. The tension affected his last season with the Dubs and resulted in his shooting slump, raged-filled interviews, contributing to his decision to join the Mavericks.

However, things didn’t go as planned for him and he struggled with his form in Dallas. The 35-year-old was far away from being in good form and shot just 29.2% from the three-point range, averaging career lows in points and assists. Considering how fast the Mavericks have decided to move from him must have made him realize that he and the Warriors should have found a way to remain together, even if it would have meant finding a middle ground in terms of a contract.

But the question remains, should the Warriors consider re-signing their former star? Well, it is both a strategic and emotional move. Considering the legacy Thompson has established in Golden State, the Warriors can think of going back to their former star. The move can also boost championship odds by adding veteran shooting and playoff experience, while reigniting fans’ excitement.

However, the trade comes with risk factors including age, declining on-court efficiency and how badly things ended last time between both the parties. Thompson, though, would add experience to the Dubs’ squad, even in a lesser prominent role off the bench.
