The Mavericks are now 2-6 in the ongoing season.
Dallas Mavericks forward and first overall pick at 2025 NBA Draft, Cooper Flagg, shared his honest reaction after his team suffered sixth defeat in eight games. The Mavericks, who finished the previous season on a disappointing note with a 39-43 record, were hoping for a better campaign this season. They had high hopes, considering they selected the first overall pick in the draft- the former Duke Blue Devils superstar Cooper Flagg. In fact, the young forward was also looking forward to starting his league career alongside notable names like Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving and more.
However, it seems that things aren’t going Jason Kidd and Nico Harrison’s way. The Mavs, who came on top in three of four preseason fixtures, lost their first two regular-season fixtures before registering their first win over the Toronto Raptors. However, they couldn’t remain consistent and have managed to record only two wins in eight games thus far. In their latest matchup, the Mavericks suffered an embarrassing loss to the New Orleans Pelicans despite decent performances from Cooper Flagg and P.J. Washington, and others.

Following the defeat, the star rookie dropped a blunt reaction and said that he has never recorded so many losses in his entire career. Speaking to the press after the game, Flagg said, “For me, it’s the most I’ve lost since, I think ever.” “It’s obviously a lot different when you have to adapt to playing a lot more games….I wouldn’t say anybody’s happy. Obviously, guys are trying to stay level-headed and know we have a lot more games to go, and it’s still really early. Speaking personally, I know it’s not fun to just keep losing games.”
Flagg, in his debut season is averaging 14.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for the Mavericks. He has been shooting 39.4% from the field, 28.1% from the three-point range, and 100% from the free-throw line. Talking about his basketball career thus far, Flagg finished his high school career with a 77-4 record and college with 35-4 record.
Cooper Flagg entered the NBA on the back of a historic career with the Duke Blue Devils in college. Needless to say, there were high expectations from the youngster, and even he was hoping for a similar start to his professional career. Flagg did showcase brilliance on the court, but he hasn’t been very consistent with it. Due to his underwhelming start, NBA insider Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report gave him a ‘B-’ in his rookie grades.
However, the Mavericks are just eight games into the season, and there is still time left for Flagg to shine. Hence, neither the franchise nor Flagg should panic. Senior players and NBA legends including Houston Rockets icon Kevin Durant, have shown their faith and confidence in Flagg. Durant said, “I think that he’s going to be a hell of a player. I think that he’s going to be such a nightmare… that… he’ll be considered one of the best of all time.”
Notably, the Mavs will now be up against the Memphis Grizzlies in their NBA Cup group stage encounter on Friday, November 7. They would want to put their losing streak to an end and turn around the result of their previous clash.
