Darius Garland undergoes surgery to repair his great toe injury.
Cleveland Cavaliers’ guard Darius Garland underwent a surgery on his left big toe and will be sidelined for the next four to five months. Garland was first diagnosed with the injury on March 23, 2025, but he managed to make it to the end of the regular season. However, the injury re-aggravated after he sprained his toe at the end of the NBA 2024-25 regular season. After missing the last two games of the regular season, he sat out during their four important games in first-round clash against the Miami Heat during the NBA Playoffs 2025.
In their official statement, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced that Garland’s status will be updated as appropriate. He is expected to undergo rehabilitation for four to five months. The 25-year-old finished the 2024-25 regular season with an average of 20.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 75 starts. After missing four games against the Heat, he couldn’t pull off the same kind of performance in his return. In the final three appearances for the Cavaliers, his average dropped to 14.0 points and 4.0 assists in 28.3 minutes per game.

According to the official statement by the Cavaliers, the two-time NBA All-Star is expected to make a full recovery and resume basketball activities by the start of the training camp in October. However, ESPN reports that the Indiana-born might miss some time at the beginning of the season. Talking about his injury, Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor reported that Garland was experiencing pain in his great toe a month after Cleveland’s final playoff game against the Pacers.
Following a discussion between him and the team officials, it was decided that surgery was the best option. Per reports, his injury is similar to turf toe. It is a sprain or tear in the main joint of the big toe, connecting it to the foot.
It goes without saying that Garland’s off-season surgery raises concerns for the Cavaliers who emerged as one of the strongest teams during the 2025 NBA season. However, their team-wide injury issues derailed their championship hopes, and they were knocked out by the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
