Chet Holmgren Signs Max Contract Extension with Oklahoma City Thunder

Gulshan Sharma

Holmgren is part of a cohesive and talented core that promises to compete for more titles in the coming years.

Chet Holmgren, the young star of the Oklahoma City Thunder and 2025 NBA champion, has signed a maximum contract extension with the franchise. The new deal, 100% guaranteed, will last five years and could reach an impressive US$ 250 million (around R$ 1.35 billion). The information was confirmed by his agent, Bill Duffy, to ESPN.

Even after missing three months of last season due to a hip injury, Holmgren returned before the All-Star Game. He was essential to the Thunder’s run to the title. Now, the Thunder are focused on securing a new contract with another young star. Jalen Williams is also currently negotiating an extension on his rookie contract.

Holmgren Gets Reward for Helping the OKC Thunder to win NBA Championship this Year

Holmgren is part of a cohesive and talented core that promises to compete for more titles in the coming years. Despite battling two serious injuries—one to his foot that sidelined him for his entire rookie season, and another to his hip last November—the center demonstrated above-average maturity, technique, and defensive presence in 2025.

After returning to the court, Chet Holmgren averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. Overall, he shot 49% from the field and 37.9% from three. In the 23 playoff games, he led the NBA in plus-minus, with +169. In the Finals alone, he blocked 11 shots – five of them in the final Game 7, a record since 1974 in the playoff.

The Oklahoma City Thunder made history as the second-youngest team to win an NBA title. To maintain this solid foundation, the front office has already secured Holmgren and also Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was named MVP of the season and Finals MVP. Shai recently signed a record four-year, $285 million extension in American sports, running through the 2030-31 season.

Recognized for his defensive instincts and presence in the paint, the 7-foot-1 center had the second-highest shot-blocking rate in the league and led the league in defensive efficiency against layups and dunks. According to ESPN data, no one was more effective at defending shots near the basket in the NBA Finals.

Finally, Chet Holmgren also joined a select group: alongside Victor Wembanyama and Kristaps Porzingis, he is one of the only players with at least 150 three-pointers and 250 blocks in his first two seasons.
