Year of First-Timers? Can Indiana Pacers Follow RCB, PSG, and Other Sports Teams to Win Their First NBA Championship?

Garima Ranawat

Would Indiana Pacers be able to add another chapter to the NBA history books?

They say every good thing takes time, and the year 2025 is a solid testament to it! Only halfway through it, and the year has proven an absolute treat for sports lovers, who have shown patience, and unwavering dedication for their favorite teams across the globe. From Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League, several milestones have encapsulated the spirit of perseverance and breakthrough in 2025.

If one thing or one tag that could perfectly describe this year, it would be that the 2025 calendar was a love letter to the teams, players and the fanatics, who displayed resilience, patience and calm while enduring years of wait and longing for their ultimate glories.

2025: A Year of Many Firsts

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, one of the most popular teams of the Indian Premier League (IPL) finally ended their long-standing wait of 18 years and lifted their maiden championship trophy on Tuesday. The team has been home to stars like Virat Kohli- the GOAT, AB De Villiers, and Chris Gayle over the years. However, despite having top cricketing names at their helm, the IPL trophy seemed like a distant mirage.

Bengaluru made it to the Finals three times since the beginning of the IPL. However, what began in 2008- the wait for the coveted trophy, came to an end in 2025- after 17 years, 6256 days, and 90,08,640 minutes. The Rajat Patidar-led side locked horns with the Punjab Kings in a heart-stopping finale and clinched their first-ever IPL title with a six-run victory, which ultimately made every second’s wait worth it.

Wondering how much the victory means to Kohli, who is fondly hailed as ‘King’ by millions in the Indian subcontinent and across the globe, and his fans? Check out the post below:

Moving to the field of soccer, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) wrote their own history in European football, as they defeated Inter Milan to lift their first ever championship title in the UEFA Champions League. PSG had been chasing the ultimate glory for decades, and poured their hearts, blood, tears and sweat for a dream that always slipped away. However, a few days ago, the Paris-based franchise defied the odds and claimed their first-ever title, which, obviously, was more than just a title.

However, RCB and PSG were not the only examples that overcame years of patience. Crystal Palace won their first ever FA Cup in 164 years in England, while Tottenham Hotspur put an end to their 17-year wait for the silverware in the Europa League, while Newcastle United also ended their 70-year trophy drought.

In addition, South Africa won their first ICC trophy in 27 years as they defeated former champions Australia in the WTC 2025. This was their second ICC trophy after winning the Knockout Cup (now Champions Trophy) in its inaugural season in 1998.

Will the Indiana Pacers Be Able to Give the Joy of NBA Championship in 2025 to Their Fans?

In another part of the world, the Indiana Pacers are set to lock horns with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals 2025. The Pacers paved their way through to the summit series by taking down the New York Knicks in the Conference Finals. The team that finished the regular season at the fourth spot, overcame multiple challenging clashes, and finally made it to the second finals in the history of the franchise, and first in 25 years.

What makes the Pacers special- that they don’t have any superstars on their roster. In fact, they are 21st among the 27 US TV markets. However, throughout the season, names such as Pascal Siakam, Tyrese Haliburton, Aaron Nesmith, and more played like a unit, and the rest is history. Indiana has never won any NBA Championship ever since their inception in the NBA in 1977.

While the Thunder are favorites to lift the coveted Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy, one thing has always remained certain about sports- uncertainty. One can learn their biggest life lessons from sports and among them is ‘It’s not over until it’s over.’ As action between the Pacers and the Thunder gets underway from Thursday, June 5, several fans, pundits and players hope for another chapter to be written in the history of the league.
