Boston Celtics Make Surprise Move by Waiving JD Davison Despite His G-League MVP Heroics

The Boston Celtics have waived JD Davison, surprising many after the guard’s breakout G-League MVP season — another tricky move as Boston continues reshaping its roster this summer.

JD Davison was picked up by the Boston Celtics as the number 53 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. The 22-year-old guard suited up for the Celtics in 36 games, posting modest averages of 1.9 points, 0.9 assists, and 0.9 rebounds in limited minutes off the bench. He also averaged just 5.5 minutes across those 36 matches.

The 22-year-old is coming off an excellent G-League season where he earned the MVP award. JD Davison scored an average of 25.1 points, 7.6 assists, and 5.3 rebounds in 30 games for the Maine Celtics.

According to a league source, the Celtics are waiving guard JD Davison.

Davison, the G League MVP, is no longer eligible for a two-way contract with the Cs but could sign one elsewhere or compete for a roster spot.

After much consideration, the Boston front office decided to move on from Davison. This may be a temporary setback for the youngster, but his G-League stats showcase that multiple teams will be fighting to get his signature ahead of the next campaign.

Celtics Continue Brutal Summer Roster Trimming

The Boston Celtics have continued to trim their roster after a disappointing NBA season. Despite having the most expensive side in the history of the league, the Celtics failed to go beyond the Conference semi-finals. The new ownership decided to trim down the apron bill.

With the JD Davison waiver, the Celtics are now under the second apron. They previously traded away Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks. Luke Korner who became a free agent signed with the San Antonio Spurs.

According to recent reports, Al Horford is set to sign with the Golden State Warriors. The Jonathan Kuminga trade limbo is what is delaying Horford’s next move. The Celtics are clearly heading in a new direction, and with big names gone, the roster could look drastically different when the next NBA season tips off.
