Boston Celtics’ head coach Joe Mazzulla was spotted cageside at UFC 319 at the United Center in Chicago. Mazzulla, who spearheaded the Celtics’ 2024 NBA Championship run, showcased his prominent passion for MMA. The event that was headlined by Khamzat Chimaev’s dominance over Dricus du Plessis across five consecutive rounds to claim middleweight gold, drew several stars. However, a few, including the Celtics’ head coach, decided to show up early, and sparked buzz among fans and commentators alike.

Notably, Mazzulla, who has been at the helm of Boston’s coaching staff since 2023, is a huge MMA fan. Not only this, but he is also a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and has trained at elite MMA gyms, including training with Xtreme Couture coach Eric Nicksick. This is not it! Mazzulla’s coaching style includes studying various mixed martial arts footage to draw parallels between the resilience required in both sports.

Challenges Lying Ahead for Joe Mazzulla Following Contract Extension

Joe Mazzulla, 36, is one of the youngest head coaches in the NBA. Recently, he signed a multi-year contract extension with the Celtics, clearly indicating that the 18-time champions see him as their long-term head coach. Mazzulla has had successful campaigns with the team, but his upcoming season is going to be filled with challenges. The Celtics have had significant roster changes, including trades of key players and losses in free agency. Not only this, but they also have Jayson Tatum injured with an Achilles injury.

In such a situation, Mazzulla would be required to adapt his coaching strategies and motivate a different team.
