Anthony Davis Reveals He Will Wear Protective Eyewear for the Rest of his NBA Career

Dallas Mavericks big man Anthony Davis revealed that he will spend the rest of his NBA career wearing protective eye wear. The Mavericks big man addressed reporters during the Media Day on Monday, and shared an update on his right eye injury. Notably, during a game on April 2 against the Atlanta Hawks, Davis suffered a scary injury after teammate Daniel Gafford accidentally elbowed him in his eye.

While he returned to the game after having stitches on a cut above the eye, the injury required him to undergo an offseason surgery to repair his detached retina. On Monday, he appeared with redness in his right eye, which according to him was because of the eyedrops he uses post-surgery. The ten-time NBA All-Star also revealed that though he doesn’t have any limitations and his vision is clear, there is a requirement that the star player needs to follow.

“Eye feels great. The redness, still [have] these drops that I have to put in my eye which which causes a little redness, but vision is back. Ready to go,” said Davis. He added that the doctors have ordered him to wear protective eyewear for the rest of his career while he is on the court. The big man also joked about his new look and said that he looks like former NBA forward Horace Grant.

Anthony Davis Hopes to Rebound After Injury-Riddled 2024-25 Season

Anthony Davis was traded to the Dallas Mavericks from the LA Lakers in exchange for Luka Doncic in a shocking deal during the 2024-25 season. However, right in his debut for the Mavericks, he sustained a left adductor injury, which forced him to sit out for multiple weeks. After he returned, he only played just eight more regular-season games.

After the Mavericks ended their campaign in a disappointing note, Davis will now hope to begin the upcoming season on a promising note. He will carry the load for his team while Kyrie Irving remains out until at least January with his torn ACL recovery. Davis will join a lineup featuring Klay Thompson, Dereck Lively, and first overall pick, Cooper Flagg.

The 2020 champion hopes to rebound after an injury-riddled 2024-25 season. He finished the campaign with an average of 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists over 51 regular-season appearances for the Lakers and the Mavericks. This was the third consecutive season which Davis finished with a double-double average.

He told the media, “Same thing as last year… Nothing [has] changed for me. The goal’s still to bring a championship here… I’m happy to be here… I want to win here.”

As of now, Davis will join the Mavericks which begins on Tuesday in Vancouver, Canada. The Mavs wil begin their 2025-26 preseason on October 6 by locking horns with the OKC Thunder at Dickies Arena in Texas.
