Former Golden State Warriors player Andrew Bogut has opined that the Dubs simply aren’t a good fit for power forward Jonathan Kuminga. With the off-season nearing, rumors of players being traded have already created a buzz in the market. Kuminga is one of the latest names to have been added to the list. While his days with the Dubs seem to be numbered, Bogut has said that there is a contrast between the styles of the player and the franchise.
The 40-year-old said, “I just think he’s in the wrong system. I don’t think he’s a ball-movement, move-off-the-ball guy that Golden State likes to play in that style. Look, it is a contrast to a lot of teams where you’re basically getting the ball in the paint to get it outside for threes.”
During his appearance on the House of Strauss podcast, Bogut added, “You’re basically looking to go misdirection a lot with Steph. But I just think he’s an iso guy, and I don’t think iso guys work in Golden State. I think right now he’s a sixth-man bench scorer at best—but he’s not that good of a scorer yet.” Notably, Kuminga has appeared in only 47 games this season. He is averaging 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game this season.
Over the last few weeks, head coach Steve Kerr phased him out of the rotation including clinical regular-season matchups. He was not a part of the lineup against the Los Angeles Clippers. Also he was not in the rotation to begin their first-round series against the Houston Rockets. However, he got a few minutes in Game 2 after Jimmy Butler’s injury and played 17 minutes in Game 3 of the series.
There have been rumors that the Warriors are planning to send the forward to the Brooklyn Nets, who have emerged as the top spot for the forward.
On the same podcast, Bogut made a surprising revelation about the Golden State Warriors. He revealed that the Dubs had almost traded superstar Stephen Curry. Sharing details about the same, Bogut revealed that during his trade from the Milwaukee Bucks, the Dubs had two options as trade pieces, Curry and Monta Ellis.
He said, “It was with some people who did all the medical advisory stuff before free agency or trades—you know, whenever you bring in a guy. It was that team of people. They were open about it with me. I had a good relationship with them, so they just blatantly told me: “The other option was Steph and his bad ankle. We decided to go with Monta.”
He added, “But then you look at hindsight: the Warriors made this genius move and freed up for Steph Curry, and the whole narrative that followed. It could have easily gone the other way. It’s a sliding door moment. They’ll deny it, but I know it for a fact.”
Despite Curry’s constant struggles with injuries, the Warriors decided to ship out Ellis, and their decision ended up changing the course of the franchise. The 37-year-old played only 26 games in his third season with the franchise due to ankle injuries.
