City celebrates with unique gesture for their most iconic player

Nearly two months have passed since the OKC Thunder secured their historic first-ever NBA championship victory. The championship euphoria still lingers strongly, especially across Oklahoma City’s passionate basketball community. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s landmark season continues to be celebrated with another remarkable off-court achievement.

The mayor of Oklahoma City David Holt announced that July 30 will be Shai Gilgeous-Alexander day. It’s been a special year for the 27-year-old, with this just one of many honors earned.

SGA was this year’s regular season MVP, finals MVP after producing consistent performances throughout the season. He averaged 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 6.4 rebounds with an impressive 52.7 Field goal percentage. This was one of the reasons behind Thunder’s title victory.

The NBA finals went till game 7 and in many games it was SGA who bailed his side out. The Indiana Pacers were competitive too, especially before Tyrese Haliburton’s untimely absence changed the series. Once the Pacers guard was out, it became easier for the OKC Thunder to clinch the title.

City Celebrates Every Thunder Hero

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wasn’t the only player to receive a day to his name by the city mayor. David Holt announced that all 18 players on the roster, head coach Mark Daigneault, GM Sam Presti, and owner Clay Bennett also got the accolade.

Oklahoma City officially dedicated the entire month of July to celebrating their NBA champion OKC Thunder squad. Each day was dedicated to a player for the title winning efforts. The month-long celebration ended with July 30 being declared Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Day in the city.

The mayor posted on X, “SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER is one of 18 Thunder players who collectively won for OKC our first NBA Championship. All 18 will live forever in our city’s history & in our hearts. In recognition of this accomplishment, I hereby proclaim that today is SHAI GILGEOUS-ALEXANDER DAY in OKC!
