Why Two-Way Contracts Are Crucial in Player Development and NBA Team Flexibility
The 2025 NBA Draft has officially wrapped up, with all eyes now on the 59 players selected across both the first and second rounds. However, not every one of these 59 draft picks will see significant playing time during their rookie season.
The NBA franchises slowly include rookie players thus giving them ample time to settle in. A number of rookies are still considered development projects and not fully ready for the rigors of a full NBA season. That’s where the NBA’s two-way contract system comes into play, offering a middle ground between the NBA and G-League.

A two-way contract lets players split time between the NBA and its official minor league system, the G-League. Usually rookie players and youngsters are signed on two way contracts which allows them to get a little bit of exposure to the NBA while continuing their development in a less intense league.
Each NBA team has a G-League affiliate designed to develop talent within the same organizational framework. For example – the Golden State Warriors’ affiliate G-League team is Santa Cruz Warriors. Similarly other NBA franchises have such teams where youngsters play each other throughout the year.
