Shaquille O’Neal has made a rare admission about the greatest of all time debate in basketball. Speaking on The Big Podcast with Shaq, the Hall of Famer said he does not consider himself part of the GOAT conversation. Instead, he believes only three names truly belong: Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Kobe Bryant.

O’Neal’s comments cut against the grain of how most NBA legends view their own careers. Ego and legacy often intertwine, but Shaquille O’Neal chose honesty over bravado. “I’m not in the GOAT conversation,” he said. “It’s Kobe, Bron, and Mike, okay, that’s it. We all have our subcategories… Like, I always wanted to be Lion King.”

For years, the debate centered almost exclusively on Jordan and LeBron. Shaq accepted that framing but never agreed with the exclusion of Kobe Bryant. He argued that Bryant’s resume, mentality, and impact demand recognition alongside the other two. “For so long, it was just Mike and Bron. And now I’m like, ‘Oh, I understand the great picks. What about the Kobster?’”

O’Neal’s perspective carries weight because of his shared history with Kobe Bryant.
